The Cause : Youth Development Program (YDP)

THE NEED

While Vietnam undergoes more rapid socio-economic changes, youths there have little resources to help them adapt and succeed to the new environment. Greater and greater financial barriers to education are created, making it hard for students, especially impoverished students, to rise out of poverty, build a career, and contribute to their communities.

Although there are organizations out there, VietHope included, who work to provide scholarships to help breach these barriers—it’s not enough. The University curriculum does not provide opportunities for internships or community service, especially youth-led and youth-designed volunteerism. Hence, we present a sustainable solution to this problem: The Youth Development Program (YDP).

With your support, VietHope will do the following 3 things of the YDP:

1. Establish a VietHope Office in Vietnam   ($18,000 USD)
uNAVSA and VietHope will establish a permanent VietHope office in Vietnam by summer 2009. This office will implement the VietHope-uNAVSA Youth Development Program at the ground level, as well as expand on VietHope's current scholarship projects.

2. Implement the Youth Development Program ($4,000 USD)
Beginning in the 2009, the Program will hold regular workshops and educational events for youth volunteers and recipients of VietHope's University Scholarship in Vietnam every academic year.

In addition, each summer, starting in 2009, an annual Youth Development Summit will be held. The Summit will involve the University Scholars and 15 Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) leaders from the uNAVSA network. The Summit's participants will  be trained in teambuilding and project management. They will then execute their very own community service project for 2 weeks in Viet Nam.

3. Expand the University Scholarship Program ($22,500 USD)
To expose more youths in Viet Nam to the YDP, VietHope will increase the number of University  Scholarship Recipients from 226 in 2007 to 400 students by 2010.

Total fund needed: $44,500 USD

Your support will be helping these students:

WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE A STAKE IN THIS PROJECT?

Together, we are building a permanent bridge between Vietnamese young community leaders in North American and in Vietnam.

Together, we are providing youths in Vietnam with professional skills such as teamwork, communication, and project management. And these youths will go on to actively support their families and their local communities.

No matter who you are, if you want to help create this sustainable project, then join the Campaign!
