Greetings from the CPP Audit Committee!

My name is QuynhAnh Le and I am the CPP Audit Director for 2012-2013. We would like to announce the release of our first audit report for our 2012 CPP Beneficiary – Children of Vietnam.

During 2011-2012, the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (UNAVSA) Collective Philanthropy Project (CPP) raised a total of $45,951.46 for the Children of Vietnam’s “Hope System of Care for Children with Disabilities” project. Since then, UNAVSA CPP and Children of Vietnam have been working together to ensure the donations are used to care for children in Vietnam.

UNAVSA CPP has made the first two installment payments (out of 4) of $11,487.86 each to the Children of Vietnam on November 11, 2012 and January 1, 2013. As of January 14, 2013, Children of Vietnam has not utilized any of the payment. However, Children of Vietnam proposed a budget that they will be following for the next few months to utilize the funds.

As of now, Children of Vietnam has successfully established the Cam Le Project Infrastructure to begin the prescreening and screening stages for identifying potential children with disabilities (CWDs) through the cooperation of the Project Management Board (PMB) and Care Management Team (CMT). Children of Vietnam projects that the next 1-5 months will be mainly focused on the start-up activities. Then during the 6th-18th months, enrollment of CWDs, follow-up visits, and case reviews will occur.

For more about the work that Children of Vietnam does, please visit their website at: http://www.childrenofvietnam.org/

As we continue to work with Children of Vietnam, UNAVSA will update our members regarding the progress of “Hope System of Care for Children with Disabilities”.

For a copy of the audit report for “Hope System of Care for Children with Disabilities” project, please contact me at quynh.anh.le@unavsa.org. Additionally, please feel free to provide me with any questions or feedback regarding this update.

Sincerely Yours,
QuynhAnh Le
CPP Audit Director

Hello UNAVSA Community,

Members of the greater UNAVSA community came together during the 9th annual UNAVSA conference in Minneapolis, MN, on July 27, 2012 to vote for the next beneficiary for the Collective Philanthropy Project (CPP).

The CPP is an initiative created in 2004 for Vietnamese-student and community organizations to collaborate in working toward a charitable cause. The idea was to create momentum for a collective continental effort under a philanthropic campaign each year. The CPP campaign helps a non-profit organization to better achieve their mission through spreading awareness as well as collective and collaborative fundraising with UNAVSA.

Months before the conference, non-profit organizations were nominated and encouraged to submit an application and project proposal. After reviewing the 15 applications, our Selection Board selected the Forgotten People Foundation, Good Samaritan Medical and Dental Ministries, and Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach as this year’s top 3 finalists.

The top 3 organizations traveled to Minneapolis to present their project to UNAVSA-9 attendees. Their presentations consisted of a 10-minute speech, individual Q&A, and panel Q&A. Following the presentations our attendees broke out into their regions and discussed who they wanted to be the next CPP beneficiary.

UNAVSA is delighted to announce Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach (MEMO) as the 2012-2013 Collective Philanthropy Project Beneficiary.

MEMO’s primary goal is to provide medical care and educational opportunities to the impoverished villagers in Vietnam. By supplying the villagers with the fundamental needs (health and education) deprived of them by poverty, MEMO hopes to give them a foundation in which they can raise themselves out of their current living conditions. MEMO also aims to spread awareness of the abject poverty seen in third world countries to the younger generation in the U.S. to propagate the notion of social responsibility into a brighter future.

UNAVSA and its regional partners will collaborate to help create a national campaign from September 2012 to July 2013 to help raise awareness and support MEMO’s Hepatitis B project.

If you are interested in being a part of the team that will lead this campaign please visit: www.unavsa.org/get-involved.

Contact:

Nghia Le
Collective Philanthropy Project Selection Director
nghia.le@unavsa.org

The Collective Philanthropy Project (CPP) team utilized a previously unused approach to engage supporters in order to raise over $700 for the CPP on Sunday, July 22. The 12-hour online video chat event, called “Epic CPP Hangout-a-thon,” was the final fundraiser of the CPP campaign before the start of the 2012 Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (UNAVSA) annual conference.

This year’s CPP campaign has featured new and diverse ways of raising funds and awareness, including a viral video campaign, a marathon runner, a Bike-A-Thon, the introduction of a new online donation collection system, and now an online chat video chat system – Google Hangout. “I’m happy that we could find such creative ways to spread the message about CPP and this year’s beneficiary, Children of Vietnam,” said My-Phuong Ly, CPP Campaign Director. “I’m excited we’ve been able to educate and engage with so many of our supporters.”

The CPP Campaign, Selection, and Audit teams collaborated on the idea of using Google Hangout after being challenged by the UNAVSA Executive Board in a friendly competition to see which group could raise the most money for CPP. During the event, the CPP team members performed various challenges set forth by viewers in exchange for donations, showed the “View For Hope” video, and brought on 2010-2012 UNAVSA President Dan Huynh and Children of Vietnam Executive Director Nancy Letteri for live interviews.

A total of 34 people attended the Google Hangout to interact in the live video chat, while North East UVSA President Tony Lam set up a separate impromptu live stream for overflow viewers. “I thank all of our supporters who share in our belief of the importance of philanthropy within our community,” said Ly. “I know the donations will go a long way in helping Children of Vietnam’s Hope System of Care.”

All the money raised will be donated through the CPP to Children of Vietnam, the 2011-2012 CPP beneficiary. For more information, please email myphuong.ly@unavsa.org or visit http://cpp.unavsa.org.

We will be spotlighting one of our 3 2012-2013 CPP Beneficiary finalists every other week up until conference. This week’s spotlight is of Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach. You can learn more about their organization at their website here: http://memo.zotters.org/

The Organization

Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach (MEMO)’s primary goal is to provide medical care and educational opportunities to the impoverished villagers in Vietnam.

Their Project

MEMO’s goal is to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis B in orphans, vaccinate children, and prevent mother-to-child transmission in the Vietnamese population. Through screenings and mass vaccinations, MEMO hopes to address the main mode of Hepatitis B transmission. In addition, MEMO will spread awareness so communities as a whole can continue leading healthier lives.

American Program

MEMO would like to implement a program here in the U.S. that first educates students in collaboration with other health organizations and then utilizes them spread awareness throughout Vietnamese American communities. Using culture-sensitive brochures and presentations, the public is encouraged to become more aware about their own status.

Screenings in Vietnam

Hepatitis B screenings will be conducted for orphanages throughout Vietnam to study the prevalence of the disease within a population. Hospitals and clinics will be encouraged to test pregnant mothers for Hepatitis B to prevent further mother-to-child transmission for carriers. In villages that are more isolated, portable Hepatitis B kits will be used to detect the disease. Pregnant mothers with Hepatitis B will be given more information and the proper medication to prevent transmission to the child.

Hepatitis B Vaccinations

MEMO aims to vaccinate newborns and encourage new orphans to be brought to a nearby clinic to receive vaccinations as well. For pregnant mothers testing positive for Hepatitis B, clinics need to be stocked with the proper medication to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

Long-term Vaccinations

Midwives and Vietnamese medical professionals will be taught to test for Hepatitis B and administer vaccinations. In America, volunteers will make presentations to raise awareness about Hepatitis B and hold screenings.

We will be spotlighting one of our 3 2012-2013 CPP Beneficiary finalists every other week up until conference. This week’s spotlight is of the Good Samaritan Medical and Dental Ministry. You can learn more about their organization at their website here: http://www.gsmdm.org/

The Organization:

The mission of the Good Samaritan Medical and Dental Ministry (GSMDM) is to reach out to the people of Vietnam by providing state of the art medical and dental care through annual missions, medical education and in-country healthcare facilities.

GSMDM’s purpose is to meet the healthcare needs of the underserved in Vietnam by:

1. meeting the immediate needs of patients through annual summer missions

2. meeting the long term needs of patients through our medical education initiative

3. meeting both immediate and long term needs of patients by building a GSMDM clinic and maintaining a permanent presence in Vietnam

Their target population is the underserved in Vietnam, namely, those living in Vietnam below the poverty line. Their Summer Missions have served the people of Vietnam from its northernmost border in Cao Bang to the furthest south of Vietnam in Tra Vinh. Their educational programs are generally held in Central Vietnam, where we not only target medical students, but medical practitioners and educators alike. They look to build a permanent clinic in Ho Chi Minh City (“HCMC”), Vietnam, where their target patients will be those living below the poverty line in HCMC and on the outskirts of the city limits.

Their Project:

Every year, GSMDM trains a new team of volunteers, including medical professionals, from the United States to prepare them to spend two weeks providing medical, dental, and optometric care to the underserved people of Vietnam. GSMDM aims to use all funds received from CPP’s campaigning efforts directly toward patient care. They expect to not only be able to cover the general costs of the annual mission trips, but also to expand their resources so that they can help more patients with life-changing surgical care. As their team will be traveling to Vietnam in July of 2012, they are looking to bring in funds for Team 2013. However, some of the funds may also be used toward patients from 2012 that need surgical care, but that we could not commit to at the time due to lack of funds.

Project goals:

The following goals are to be achieved within the two weeks that the Summer Missions Field Team is in Vietnam:

See patients from ten different communes.

See at least 4000 patients, performing laboratory tests as needed.

Dispense medicine to our patients, as needed.

Perform eye exams and hand out prescription glasses to our patients, as needed, up to 2000 pairs.

Perform dental care services for our patients, as needed, up to 500 patients.

Perform surgeries for patients, as needed, up to 75 patients.

Fund surgeries for patients, as needed, up to $75,000.
